Introduction to Facelift in Chevy Chase, MD

A facelift is about more than looking younger. It is about restoring facial harmony, refining your natural contours, and helping your appearance reflect the energy and confidence you still feel. As the aging process continues, the most visible signs of facial aging, including loose skin, deep folds, jowling, and changes along the jawline and neck, can create a tired or heavy appearance that no longer feels like you.

At Ikon Plastic Surgery in Chevy Chase, MD, Dr. James M. Economides performs facelift surgery for patients throughout Washington, DC, and the surrounding region, using advanced techniques to achieve refreshed, natural-looking results. Whether you are comparing facelift options such as a deep plane facelift, mini facelift, or a non-surgical liquid facelift, this guide explains your options, what recovery involves, who makes a good candidate, and how to choose the right facelift surgeon for your goals.

What is a Facelift?

A facelift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that reduces signs of aging in the face and neck.1 It involves tightening underlying facial muscles, removing excess fat, repositioning the underlying facial tissues, and carefully redraping excess skin, resulting in smoother wrinkles, reduced jowls, and tighter skin. It can make patients look several years younger, with results that last several years.

Dr. Economides offers a variety of effective facelift techniques to his patients across Washington, D.C.

Unlike a traditional facelift, the deep plane facelift works beneath the skin by releasing key retaining ligaments within the deeper layers of the connective tissue and repositioning the deeper facial tissues as a single unit. Rather than placing tension solely on the skin, this approach restores youthful contours while preserving natural facial movement and expression.

Because the deeper facial structures are repositioned rather than simply tightening the skin, a deep plane facelift can restore youthful contours while maintaining natural facial movement and expression. This technique is a highly advanced facelift designed to correct moderate to severe sagging of the midface, jawline, and neck. It is often recommended for patients with severe facial sagging who require more comprehensive repositioning of the deeper facial tissues to restore youthful contours.

Dr. Economides recommends the deep plane technique for many patients because it enables comprehensive facial rejuvenation by addressing the deeper support structures of the face rather than relying primarily on skin tightening.

How to Begin Your Facelift Journey

An initial consultation with Dr. Economides at our Chevy Chase office is the first step in your facelift journey. Dr. Economides often helps people in the Washington, DC, area, but patients come from across the country to receive treatment. The consultation will involve the following:

  1. Dr. Economides will conduct a thorough examination of your face and neck.
  2. Explain your aesthetic and anti-aging goals. It’s important to be honest, so Dr. Economides can accurately determine which technique to use.
  3. He will review your medical history to ensure the surgery is safe
  4. You’ll work together to develop a personalized treatment plan based on your facial anatomy, degree of aging, and aesthetic goals. Depending on your needs, this may include surgical or non-surgical facial rejuvenation options.

5 Steps to Prepare for My Facelift with Dr. Economides

To ensure a safe and successful surgery and recovery, you will need to prepare properly. This involves following strict instructions that are essential parts of the journey.

  1. Stop drinking alcohol 48 hours in advance and quit smoking 2 weeks in advance.
  2. Do not take any blood thinners, also known as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)
  3. Make sure you can take about 2 weeks off from work for your recovery
  4. Confirm that a reliable friend or family member can pick you up from your surgery to take you home and monitor you for the first 24-48 hours
  5. Cook about a week’s worth of meals to easily access while you recover

What to Expect On the Day of Facelift Surgery

On the day of your facelift surgery, you should not wear any makeup or lotion on your face and neck, as these can interfere with the process.

You will return to our office in Chevy Chase, outside Washington, DC, and be led to our surgical suite. Dr. Economides will walk you through the procedure again, so you know what to expect. You are welcome to ask any questions that you still have. You’ll be given general anesthesia, unless you are getting a liquid facelift, in which case you’ll be given a topical anesthetic.

To begin the procedure, Dr. Economides will carefully make incisions hidden in the hairline around the temples, wrap around the front of the ears, and finish at the lower scalp. Careful incision placement is designed to preserve a natural look and avoid an abnormal hairline. He’ll elevate the skin and tighten the underlying muscles and tissues of your face and neck.

Then, he’ll reposition the underlying facial tissues, carefully remove excess skin, redrape the remaining skin without excessive tension, and close the incisions with fine sutures.

Once your facelift is complete, Dr. Economides will place a light compression dressing around your face and neck to help minimize swelling and protect the surgical sites during the earliest stages of healing. After spending time in the recovery area, you’ll be discharged home with detailed postoperative instructions. A trusted friend or family member should drive you home and remain with you during the first 24 hours following surgery.

A contact arranged ahead of time will take you home and monitor you as you recover.

Combining My Facelift with Other Procedures

Most areas of the face age at a similar pace, which is why many patients choose to combine a facelift with complementary facial rejuvenation procedures. Depending on your goals, Dr. Economides may recommend a neck lift, eyelid surgery, brow lift, or fat grafting to restore youthful volume and create balanced, harmonious results.

A neck lift removes excess sagging skin and fat from the neck, creating a tighter, more contoured neck and jawline. This procedure is frequently added to provide a seamless transition from the face to the neck in a natural-looking way that avoids a disproportionate appearance.

Facelift Recovery

Immediately After Surgery

You will return home wearing a light compression dressing to help minimize swelling and protect your incisions. Rest with your head elevated, follow all postoperative instructions, and have a trusted friend or family member stay with you during the first 24 hours. Bruising, swelling, and a feeling of tightness are expected during the first several days.

The First Week

Swelling and bruising typically peak around days 3 to 4, then gradually improve. Continue wearing your surgical dressings as instructed, removing them only when permitted for showering. You may be advised to wait a day or two before showering to avoid placing stress on your incisions.

Weeks 2-3

Most patients feel comfortable returning to work within 10 to 14 days. Light walking is encouraged early in recovery to promote healthy circulation, while more strenuous activities should still be avoided. You’ll also attend follow-up appointments so Dr. Economides can monitor your healing and provide guidance on incision and scar care, including specialized tape and ointments when appropriate.

Months 4-6 and Beyond

Swelling continues to improve, and your facial contours become more refined with each passing week. As healing progresses, Dr. Economides will let you know when it is safe to gradually resume moderate, then more strenuous, exercise based on your recovery. Your results will continue to mature over the following months.
