How to Begin Your Lip Lift Journey

  5. Devise a surgical plan that fits your needs and goals, and prepare for the surgery

What to Expect on the Day of Lip Lift Surgery

Arrive at our office in Chevy Chase, MD, just outside Washington, DC, free of makeup and lotion. Arrange for someone to take you home after the surgery, as it will not be safe to take yourself home.

You will review your surgical plan with Dr. Economides, and he will make precise pre-operative markings under the nostrils before administering local or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of your surgery. When the anesthesia is administered, you will not be able to feel any pain from the incisions or anything else during the procedure.

Dr. Economides will begin the procedure by making a precise incision along the base of the nostrils. Then, he will meticulously remove a small section of the skin and anchor the remaining tissue at the base of the nose to elevate the lip and shorten the distance between the nose and the lip. He will carefully seal the incision with sutures and apply a light bandage to minimize swelling and protect the fresh incisions.

Combining My Lip Lift with Other Procedures

Immediately After Surgery

Swelling, bruising, and soreness around your upper lip and Cupid’s bow are expected during the first several days after surgery. Take your prescribed pain medication as directed to help keep you comfortable. Applying cold compresses and the recommended lip ointments can also help minimize swelling and support healing.

The First Week

Rest is one of the most important parts of your recovery. Sleep with your head elevated on a few extra pillows for the first 3 to 5 days to reduce swelling and fluid buildup. Stay hydrated, eat a healthy diet, and consider soft foods while your lips remain sensitive. Be gentle when brushing your teeth to avoid irritating your lip and gums.

Weeks 2-3

Short walks are encouraged within the first couple of days to promote healthy circulation, but avoid strenuous exercise and activities that cause excessive sweating for at least 7 to 10 days. Continue attending your scheduled follow-up appointments so Dr. Economides can monitor your healing and guide your recovery.

Months 6-8 and Beyond

As swelling and bruising continue to resolve, your lip settles into its new position, and your final results become increasingly visible. By approximately 6 to 8 weeks, most patients are able to appreciate the refined shape, enhanced Cupid’s bow, and youthful fullness achieved with their lip lift.
